Bill Harrison was probably my oldest friend. We became
buddies when we entered kindergarten and found out that
we both lived in the east end of Marshalltown. I am
probably one of only a few people that know how he came
to be known as "Hutch". Before Babe Ruth and Little League baseball was readily available to young boys, we
would attend Ben Trickey's baseball school in the summer. Ben knew that Bill lived on East Main, but confused him with another family that lived there by the
name of Hutchinson. Ben always called him "Hutch".
As youngsters we formed a baseball team we called the
East End Eightballs. This team also included another
classmate, Verle Weaver. Bill was the catcher, of course. I always looked forward to my Marshalltown visits and seeing him. As is true of the loss of all good friends there is a void left in my life.
