In Loving Memory of Sam Giarratano

Sam Giarratano, age 83, of Marshalltown, a proud US Army Veteran, passed from this earthly life on the morning of Monday, January 21st, 2019, at the State Center Nursing and Rehab in State Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 25th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest with full military honors by the combined American Legion/VFW posts in the Marshalltown area. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Born on May 29, 1935, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Joseph and Elda (Bunger) Giarratano. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School and later attended Marshalltown Junior College. Sam served our country honorably in the United States Army in engineering. 

Sam was employed in his working career in insurance, carpet and furniture retail and owned and operated Joen’s Store in Gilman. He was an active member of the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 (serving as two term commander), 40 & 8, Coliseum committee, Sons of the American Legion and the All-Veterans Committee.          

On August 21st, 1976, he was united in marriage to Leota (Rouse), at the Little Brown Church. They made their home in Marshalltown all of their married lives. Sam was previously married to Helen Andrews in 1955.

Left to cherish his memory are Leota, his loving wife of 42 years; his four children- Don (Rama) Giarratano of Henderson, NV, Connie (James) Poole of Marshalltown, Dawn Clapsaddle of Marshalltown and Michelle (Patrick) Coles of Des Moines; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother Tom (Karen) Giarratano and sister Genevieve Crawford all of Marshalltown as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, Sam rejoined his parents, brother Erwin Giarratano, son Scott Waterman and granddaughter Courtney Giarratano.
